This is one of the most important “Must Go” place among all places in your Kuching travel destinations plan. You get to see the Orang Utan in the wild and not caged. They roam freely in the surrounding jungle and will appear at the feeding spot during the feeding time. Not all the apes will show up but interestingly, they know the timing better then you do. So remember the feeding time, 9am & 3pm daily, if you miss it, you’ll have to make another visit.
The entrance fee cost you RM3 per person, a fraction of cost compare to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in Sabah that cost you RM30 per person, and you get to see pretty much the same thing, but only with the better facility.
The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is located just 12 miles south of Kuching in Borneo’s 1613-acre Semenggoh Nature Reserve. Since 1975 the center has been accepting animals either orphaned, injured, or rescued from captivity and reintroducing them back into the wild.
When established, the three main aims of the Centre were:
-To rehabilitate wild animals who have been injured, orphaned in the wild or handicapped by prolonged captivity, with the objective of subsequently releasing them back to the wild.
-To conduct research on wildlife and captive breeding programmes for endangered species.
-To educate visitors and the general public about the importance of conservation.
A visit to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is a once in a lifetime experience. You’ll have a chance to see semi-wild orang utan, ranging from tiny infants and boisterous adolescents to dignified mature adults, enjoying life in a secure natural habitat.
Driving to Semenggoh Wildlife Center from Kuching city center takes about 30 minutes.
